Cobby Days
The farm was action-packed the last two weeks of August as the Mudgirls and Good Earth Builders taught over a dozen participants how to turn sand, clay, straw and water into walls. Like magic, the cob kitchen rose before our eyes
(working on the oven)

The first week began with a primer in cob recipes as well as some basic cobbing technique. Within two days, there was a foot around the entire wall perimeter. Then we moved into the more complicated stuff: windows, door frames, bottles, "deadmen" and, of course the oven.

(making cob and laying cob...)
The walls aren't quite finished (about 80% there) but most of the finnicky stuff is. The Good Earth Builders will be back in the Fall to help finish the walls and the oven while the Mudgirls return also to help with the cedar shake roof. Plans are already in the works for next Spring including: cob floor, insulating the ceiling and the plaster finish.

(week one - kids and all!)
